Infant-Parent Training Institute:
10-Week Course in Maternal Mental Health

The Maternal Mental Health Course is offered through the Infant-Parent Training Institute (IPTI) at the Center for Early Relationship Support, JF&CS. In addition to this course, IPTI offers a One and Two Year Infant Mental Health Certificate, Infant Observation Seminar, Monthly Seminars, Short Courses, Master Classes and a Peer Study Group.

Course Description:
A mother's mental health affects her own sense of self, the well-being of her children, her close relationships and the functioning of the family. A mother of an infant or young child who is struggling with depression, anxiety or other emotional difficulties faces multiple challenges in coping and parenting. This course will examine the profound emotional transformation of becoming a mother, the influence of culture on maternal mental health and the impact of mental health issues on the parent-child relationship. Included in the class sessions are issues of trauma, intergenerational parenting patterns, research on maternal depression, mothering under special circumstances and the possibilities for intervention, including medication, mind-body approaches and mother-baby psychotherapy. Use of video and opportunities for exploring case material will be provided.

Faculty: Peggy H. Kaufman, M.Ed., LICSW

Peggy Kaufman is the Director of the Center for Early Relationship Support at Jewish Family & Children’s Service. With a background in perinatal emotional health and maternal development, her interests include the earliest relationships. Ms. Kaufman has extensive experience in training and has taught at Bank Street College, Lesley University and Wheelock College where she was adjunct faculty for over 25 years. Clinical practice, consultation and supervision continue to be a major part of her work and interest. The course will include guest presenters.
